SAGADA 2024: ECHO VALLEY TRAIL + HANGING COFFINS
Pinuntahan kami ni Kuya Willis, our tour guide, sa tinutuluyan namin at exactly 9 am, right after we had breakfast.
Bago mag umpisa ang lakad namin, Kuya Willis shared a brief history about the Mission Compound in Sagada which consists of a church, a school, a hospital, and a cemetery.
Our first stop was at St Mary's Episcopal Church which was built by American missionaries in 1904 under the leadership of Rev. John Staunton.
Kahit located sya sa town proper you can still feel the tranquility of the place.
After visiting the church, naglakad na ulit kami ng kaunti until we reached the cemetery. The Anglican cemetery is more than just a burial ground. As the signage board says: This is a place to remember, give thanks, grieve or heal; a place for worship, prayer, and reflection. It gives witness to those buried here.
The Echo Valley Trail starts at the end of the cemetery. It is accessible to hikers of all levels kaya okay lang kahit may bitbit na baby.
Kaya pala daw to tinawag na Echo Valley kasi when you scream in the middle of the trail, it will echo throughout the valley.
There were rock formations along the trail that have breathtaking backdrop kaya naman we took the opportunity to capture family photos.
Finally, we reached the famous Hanging Coffins of Sagada. Igorots placed the coffins high up because they believed that it would bring the souls closer to heaven. They also bury their loved ones curled up like a baby dahil naniniwala sila na ang tao ay dapat umalis sa mundo sa parehong paraan na sila ay pumasok dito.
You can watch the last coffin hanged at Echo Valley here.
Yung ibang mga kasama namin nag extend ng trek papuntang Bokong Falls accompanied by another tour guide. We wanted to join but Kuya Willis said it wasn't safe for the baby.
Kasama namin pabalik sina JD and my parents-in-law. Si Agatha naman nakatulog na pagkatapos nya dumede. The trek going back was a bit tiring kasi puro paakyat naman, and we had to take multiple short breaks dahil kasama namin si JD. He wasn't complaining naman na pagod na sya but we wanted to make sure na hindi talaga sya mapagod.
On our way back to the church nadaanan ulit namin ung bilihan ng lemon pie. Ang sabi ni Kuya Willis, it's the best tasting lemon pie in Sagada kaya gusto din namin matikman.
They don't sell it in slices as it's usually made to order. Luckily may isang natira nung pumunta kami, either sobra or hindi na kinuha ng nagpagawa. I forgot kung 270 or 280 pesos sya. At first naasiman ako sa lasa nya but the more you eat the tastier it gets. Nag uwi kami nito sa Tagaytay and I couldn't get enough of this pie lalo na kapag galing sa ref tapos sabay mong kinain ung crust, lemon curd and the meringue on top.
Unfortunately umulan kinagabihan kaya hindi kami nakapag roast ng marshmallows over a bonfire.
Masarap naman mga pagkain nila at cozy yung ambiance dahil halos lahat made of wood.
After lunch pupunta naman kami ng Sumaguing Cave. :)
